Today

Southerly wind on it again for bumpy, low quality surf. But at least the water is warming up.

Dawn-10am: S wind and a negative low tide has the surf looking ugly early. The tide push through mid AM will get a little better but surf quality will generally remain low. Mix of southerly swell and some NW windswell for surf in the knee-waist high range (esp as tide pushes in), with top spots to chest high.

Afternoon Outlook: Surf size holds as S wind bump also holds.

Newport Lower Jetties Surf Guide

36th is a great place for average surfers in the summer. On big, closeout south swells, you can find fun peaks/left walls in that area. However, the closer you get to the pier the smaller the waves will be. The waves are more forgiving and mellower than the upper jetties. 36th can be fun with the winter's west swells too. Plus there's less crowd and it's less competitive than 28th Street and Blackies. (Hint: It's worth a check on big closeout south swells when the south wind is blowing.) Read more
