Ship Bottom Travel & Surf Guide

Know Before You Go: Surf, Weather & Travel Info

Long Beach Island:

Nestled within the upscale Harvey Cedars town in the northern end of the island, Hudson is equipped with plenty of juice and serves up the meatiest peaks around. The beachbreak does its thing close to shore with both lefts and rights that allow plenty of the old in and out. Unless your bank account can finance a lofty summer retreat at the shore, you’ll be hiking in from a few blocks away like the rest of us. Parking is available, but it is located on the other side of the highway. And before you go dismissing the lifeguard as some landlubbing fraternity pinhead who just likes checking out the girls, think again. Top local surfers often hold court on the stands, so rest assured that their whistlings are not idle banter.

7-11:

Don’t tell anyone, but right when you drive into town from the mainland, you’ll run into a 7-11. Right behind is a wave called 7-11. We figured no one would know where to find it if we called it that. It’s a pretty weak beachbreak that sits way the hell out there beyond a big trench near the shore. This is where all the people who are sick of turnpike after parkway leading to expressway like to surf, because they’re clueless and can’t wait to get to the beach. It’s great for beginners, but if you call yourself an expert, you’ll know that it’s not the place to be.
