Maui Surfing Insights

Aloha and welcome to Surfline’s Maui Surf Reports and Surf Cams – the most comprehensive and reliable source for Maui surf reports and surf cams.

From Jaws to Honolua Bay, Lahaina to Kahului, and all the secret spots along the Hana Highway, Maui is holding a wealth of surf potential. And while there is no shortage of world-class surf spots on Maui, it is important to keep in mind that surf forecasting around the island can be tricky. Because of swell shadowing from the islands of Moloka’i, Lana’i and Kaho’olawe, large swaths of Maui’s west coast can get blocked from the swell that may be hitting the other Hawaiian Islands. The wintertime is the prime season for surf in Maui when big northwest swells light up the island’s myriad reefs. The island is also a haven for windsurfers due to the constantly howling trades. A keen understanding of what direction the wind is coming from is critical to surfing on Maui. Like the other islands in Hawaii, the tradition and culture of surfing are engrained in Maui and there is a hard core local scene at most spots. Like surfing anywhere in the world, give respect when showing up for the first time. Over the years Jaws, or Peah’i, has produced some of the biggest waves in the world as huge north swells hit the reef and can form waves an upwards of 50 to 60 feet. Laird Hamilton and the Strapt crew first pioneered tow-in surfing here, and today there’s an elite crew of watermen including Kai Lenny, Ian Walsh and Albee Layer that are paddling Jaws at sizes never imagined. Honolua Bay has played host to the culmination of the WSL Women’s Championship Tour and produced some memorable competitive moments, most notably for women’s world champion Carissa Moore. Local knowledge and a well-informed understanding of swell angle, swell period, tides and wind direction are key to scoring a good day on Maui.
