Today

Still plenty of size off fading swell, largest in the morning. Lightest winds then too.

Dawn-10am: Fading SSW swell, along with a little lingering NW swell, still has surf running chest to head high in the morning, with better sets in the overhead range at top breaks. Slow fade as the day goes on.

Variable to light onshore S wind early for a mostly clean start. Light W wind crumble comes up mid-morning.

Afternoon Outlook: Moderate onshore lump in the afternoon. Manageable but more chatter than the past couple of days.

Newport Lower Jetties Surf Guide

36th is a great place for average surfers in the summer. On big, closeout south swells, you can find fun peaks/left walls in that area. However, the closer you get to the pier the smaller the waves will be. The waves are more forgiving and mellower than the upper jetties. 36th can be fun with the winter's west swells too. Plus there's less crowd and it's less competitive than 28th Street and Blackies. (Hint: It's worth a check on big closeout south swells when the south wind is blowing.) Read more
