Atlantic Park Surf
Book nowLocated a couple blocks back from Virginia Beach's sandy shore, Atlantic Surf Park is the first wave pool in North America to utilize Wave Garden technology. The lagoon -- featuring a left on one side and a right on the other -- is powered by the 46-module Wavegarden Cove and currently features nine settings, ranging from beginner to pro barrel. Size-wise, you're looking at waist- to head high. Water temps will range depending on season/day.
Each level has total capacity that ranges from 20 to 40 surfers in the lagoon, and the number of waves per set decreases as the level increases. On average, surfers will have the opportunity to catch 10-15 waves during each session.
Atlantic Park Surf is open year-round, barring seriously inclement weather and/or maintenance, and offers lessons, board/wetsuit rentals, wax, sunscreen, showers, cabanas -- meaning, essentially, you can just show up with nothing and enjoy a session. (Note: the board selection, presented by WRV, is extensive. You'll likely find whatever kind of craft you're used to and/or looking for. As with most freshwater pools, it is worth getting something with a touch more volume.)
Also worth noting: pay close attention to the briefing. Especially the part about "when you fall, head to the wall", 'cause you don't want to get in the next rider's way. There's also a very handy screen at the takeoff zone that gives all kinds of useful info, including number of sets left, number of waves left in a set, and a countdown to when the next set will come.
Pricing for a 55-minute surf session will range from $90 to $161 depending on the wave level and season. The whole lagoon can be rented out privately. (Contact directly for details.)
