El Canal
Dominican Republic Surf Spots
Surf Guide
Just west of the Encuentro zone, El Canal turns into one of the DR's most classic reefbreaks whenever the waves get solid. It needs a head-high swell to begin to work properly, really gets cooking when it's overhead, and will hold up to double-overhead-plus surf. At its best, El Canal offers a fast, powerful left wall and a shorter wedgier right, both of which can be extremely hollow, and therefore favors surfers who know how to ride the tube.

Spot Rating
Fun
A fast, powerful, shapely Caribbean reefbreak, El Canal is just shy of world-class. It blows out early, but can be really fun if the swell is solid and you know what you're doing.
Shoulder Burn

Rip currents are the canary in the coal mine for impending morning trades, which can make for a lot of paddling on bigger swells.
Water Quality
Clean
Clean, clear Caribbean water for the most part.

Tide
Tidal range is under 0.6 meters, so a rising or dropping tide will yield the same results. Besides, given the slim morning window, no one plays the tides here. They play the trades.
