Attack of the Fourteen Year Olds

Aussie grom, Tyler Wright, wins the Beachley Classic, Sydney


She’s 14 and yesterday beachl.jpgshe knocked down some of the biggest names in women’s surfing--Jacqueline Silva, Silvana Lima, Amee Donohoe and World Champ, Steph Gilmore--in an ASP Women’s World Tour event in Sydney Australia. In case you didn’t know, that’s a very big deal. The girls Tyler beat are literally the best female surfers in the world. And though the waves weren’t all that great, both she and Silvana Lima deserved their place in that final.


But wait--it was just this past summer that another 14-year-old wildcard from Hawaii, Malia Manuel, took home the U.S. Open trophy. She was the youngest ever winner of the big time event. What the heck is going on? Is someone slowly building an army of teenie-tiny girl-bots?


beachl3.jpgWe think this says a lot more about the next generation than it does the women surfers of today. Our prediction: The Hawaiians and Australians are about to dominate surfing…
