North County local, Cori Shumacher wins 2008 Roxy Jam Cardiff

Cori Schumacher won the Roxy Jam Cardiff featuring the Linda Benson World Longboard Pro and ASP North America Women's Longboarding titles over defending event champion Jen Smith, 22, Chelsea Williams, 23, and Summer Romero, 26, in two-to-four foot surf today at Cardiff Reef in Cardiff, California.roxy1.jpg

Schumacher claimed the win in front of an adoring home crowd this afternoon in an action packed Final. The Cardiff local earned a heat total of a 16.50 out of a possible 20 point score to take the win, leaving Smith, who finished in second, needing a near-perfect 9.95 out of 10 point score to take the win.

roxy2.jpg"I can honestly say that turning around and seeing everyone on the beach and being able to hear the cheers gave us so much more to work for," Schumacher said. "Roxy, ASP and Linda (Benson) put on such a great event here."

"The goal for me was just to make the Final again this year," Smith said. "It's awesome with Cori (Schumacher) competing again this year. She didn't compete last year, but she competed in 2006 and made the Final and now she came back in 2008 and made the Final again. It's really special to surf a heat with Cori out there because she pretty much owns Cardiff. I love watching her surf this wave."

Hansen Surfboards $3,000 Wave of the Day Award went to Bianca Valenti.

World class professional longboarding and beautiful weather attracted several hundred spectators, surfers, and families to the event over the weekend. Over 20 booths participated in the beach fair, including local artists, goodies to snack on, hair cuts from Paul Mitchell, and non-profits such as Keep-A-Breast Foundation, the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy, and Surfrider Foundation. Proceeds from the event went to benefit the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy.
