Slater's big, electric backhand hack was the biggest move of the entire event—with the exception of Andy's ability to power out of a tube that would have taken out anyone else. Bobby got the waves, but Kelly is still the measuring stick until proven otherwise. I think that the power of human attention cannot be ignored. People would like to see another champion right now, including myself. Parko? for sure. Taj? Yeah! Adriano? Cool. Kelly will get 10, just maybe not this year. Kelly/Andy 2010?

JB, it wasn't Jihad who got a 10 in Tahiti last year, it was Leo Neves! IC, rarely do you see one whole wave ripped from start to finish in a TB video part, unless it's a sick shack at some mysto slab. I understand you're saying he should just let loose and freesurf, but if he were surfing to get clips for a video part he wouldn't surf all his waves from beginning to end. Instead he'd concentrate on doing one big move or a combo of the 2 biggest moves possible. Does the criteria need to change?

Like rookies on tour, Kanga, Griggsy and Jason are starting to get a hang of this commentary thing event by event! Just a few remarks: AI has already got 1 of the 3 WCs, if Steds and Gabe get the other 2, none left for Nate to get JB! Don't count out Miky and Tim, the more you put them down the higher they will fly! Wardo's losses make his wins feel so much better! JB, don't joke about how they break ties, someone might believe you!

I like it that the three on the panel spoke their mind. A lot of the folks who have posted comments seem all bent out of shape about "why is this guy ranked # 6" and "how can Slater be # 45?" The thing is that competitive surfing is a Subjective sport, meaning that it can be seen many different ways and many points-of-view. One fan might think that a guy on the top 45 surfs like a kook. The next guy might think the dude should be #1. If YOU think Slater is #1, who cares what anyone else thinks?

If your "moderators" had not graduated from the Benito Mussolini School of Moderating, we, the readers, might be better entertained by the colorful comments submitted in response to your Power Rank1ngs. Consider it.

Post the formula you use to crunch the numbers. Hell, post the entire data set.

Well if the tour only saw 3ft from this point on i would say surfers like TB, Dane R would be likly to be closer to top 5 and i wouldnt count out slater or knox yet; but i must say i would like to see parko or TB take the tital this year, but also want to see slater take 10

If there were more than marginal quality waves for this break throughout most of the event perhaps these new rankings would make more sense, but to shuffle the order so much based on fluke conditions? I know that some would say this is what the Tour is all about, but my reply would be not the Tour as intended today in 2009. I guess the panel is hoping for 3 ft and under at all future events......

not sure how you came up with the numbers to get your result or why and im sure there a answer out there somewhere so ive stay tuned for the nextresult and see if it gets any better
editor reply:
We had our accountant crunch the numbers using a standard deviation formula; we're going to continue to hone it in as we go through the year.

I wrote a comment before asking why is TB ranked #6 when two of the analysts have at #3. I thought the other one would have him much lower and that would explain it,but after seeing everybody's ranking, they all have at #3,yet he shows at #6 overall.Confusing.

C'mon, Slater at 45 on two judges cards! Give me a frickin' break! That said, the averaged out rankings seem to be plausible. Getting better, but keep tightening it up. ASP hopes that Kelly will turn it on, otherwise most of us will be turning it off.

To quote Donavon "there is without any doubt a nationalistic agenda behind all of these individual rankings"
Didnt really care for Ian Cairns comments about T.
Knox. He sounds like the typical bitter aging athlete.

I think these new writers have spent too much time with their faces in the pipe. Bobby beats some easy draws (except Andy) to win one small wave event and he's number 3? Suck one lately?
deadhead portugal 05/25/2009 09:45 AM
i think it's ridiculous for starts to write marlon lipke's name wrong ( not marlin) second, after yet another great wave from tiago pires, putting him in the lasts places of the raking is at least laughful
editor reply:
Will fix the typo. Thanks for the catch. And Tiago is number 26, not last!

How can you justify ranking Kelly at 45! Do you really expect us to believe that since December his decline has been that precipitous?! Please. . . The man deserves far more respect. He's given far too much to the sport to be treated so shabbily. When on, his surfing is still the best. We won't see another surfer more talented & charismatic in our lifetimes. The tour will be a far lesser place w/out him. You should lament his possible departure from the WCT- not encourage it! Shame. . .
