You would think a hurricane survival
guide for surfers would contradict everything
that is recommended for "normal" people.
They batten down the hatches; we come out of the
woodwork. They scream in fear; we scream with
joy. They evacuate; we activate. Actually, a surfer's
survival guide follows the same basic tenets as
any other hurricane plan. But like the Bible,
each principle is open to interpretation.
Stock up on non-perishables - Stop by your local
shop and pick up plenty of wax, leashes, sunscreen
and rashguards. You never know if the owner will
close the shop in order to go surfing.
Gather emergency phone numbers - 900-976-SURF
is easy to remember, but be sure to keep it handy
in case you are struck by a stray mobile home
and develop a case of amnesia.
Stay tuned into storm updates -- you'll need
to know when and if a storm is going to strike,
so you can tell all your friends to leave town
and hoard all the waves to yourself.
Know your evacuation route -- In case roads are
blocked by fallen trees, check the air in your
bicycle tires and work out the quickest path to
the beach.
Actually, these storms are no laughing
matter. The smallest Cat 1 can rip apart homes
and make the bravest stormrider question his reasons
for staying. So you'll need to monitor much more
than the swell window.
Pay attention to all government
reports. When they ask you to leave, do so. And
if you must stay at ground zero make sure you're
prepared. In fact, no matter whether you plan
on staying or not, be prepared for the season
ahead of time. Buy plywood or storm shutters now
as suppliers will sell out when a storm is around.
The same goes for food and water. In fact, read
all the material on hurricane readiness provided
by the National Hurricane Center immediately
and take the proper precautions.
By the time a storm is within striking distance,
it may be too late. And trust us -- surfing will
be the last thing on your mind.
