Q
Does anyone have some classic sayings for a surf memorial? My brother-in-law passed away recently and was an avid surfer. We're looking to dedicate a spot to him overlooking his favorite break and need some good sayings for the memorial. Anything would help. The shorter the better.
I thought of "Surfing is for the Soul." Too corny????

Swell.com editor Nick Carroll -- who is all too familiar with this sad subject -- responds
Surfer memorials all seem very personal and tend to be based on the qualities worth celebrating in the deceased person. The ones I've attended have all varied considerably on this basis, and there hasn't been any particular shared theme other than just the feeling of brother and sisterhood involved. You should choose words that best fit your brother-in-law's character. For instance: recently at my home beach we lost a great friend to suicide -- a pretty gloomy sorta subject. But our friend was a wonderful human whose most marked characteristic was his generosity to others. So we're commemorating him by setting a big stone block on the path to our spot, with a brass plaque on it asking everyone to ride a wave for him when they go for a surf. It's what he would've wanted.
As far as corny goes, gosh, don't worry about that! Go with your gut and avoid cliches, and best wishes to you and your family in the process.
