At Studer surfboards our mission is to work one on one with our customers getting them the right board under their feet, and producing high-performance, high-quality custom boards by using the best materials and latest designs coming out of the shaping bay. With over 400 boards in stock, customs that can be ready in 5 days, and located in Bali, Indonesia, the only real question is... why even bring a boards to indo?

Luke shaped his first boards in his parents garage, at the age 16. "It was a ironing board, haha, but it went alright. My dad was a carpenter so I had all the tools to get started..." After high school Luke moved to Huntington Beach and began working for Sakal Surfboards, sanding and shaping boards on their side for himself and a few friends.

After saving a bit money, Luke traveled to Indonesia and was hooked. Each year he'd stay a bit longer, taking with him his new designs to test in the perfect waves of Indo. Eventually he was flying home just the to finance the next trip. Back in H.B , he'd work 7 days a week, sanding for labels like Lost, Cole and Chilli, while continuing to develop his own shapes and designs. Slowly but surely the demand for Luke's boards grew more and more.

About 5 years ago, Luke packed up his planner, template and set out to make Bali home base. "It's working out really well, a lot of my customers and friends all travel here at least once a year, so now they call and order quivers, and I have their boards shaped and ready when they land... they are stoked, no board bags, no excess baggage."

Luke is one of the new generation of shapers taking advantage of modern technologies, which allows him to focus on designing the best possible boards for all types of waves. Key elements contribute to the success and overall quality of Luke's boards. "Indonesia is providing the perfect hi-performance testing ground which allows me to continually improve my designs" Lately Luke has been working side by side with shapers like James Chili, Murry Bourton, Dylan Longbottom and gaining crucial feedback from His team, Dede Suryana, Travis Potter and Mikala Jones, along with many other experienced surfers. The combining results of these unique factors have set Luke's craftsmanship far ahead of standard...

What do you enjoy most/least about surfboard shaping?
Surfing something you just shaped... customers wanting a deal.

What personal characteristics do you feel are necessary to be a successful shaper?
Keeping a open mind. Guys who bring in boards for me to copy, and you look at it and go...no way this will work...but he's telling you how magic the board it...

Tell us about the most rewarding surfboard design you have been involved with in your career.
It would have to be the flextail designs. Nothing new but rediscovering flex in boards and working with Mikala on refining the design. Flex is the future.

Give us an example of a board you designed that was completely different from what was popular in surfing at the time.
Travis Potter and I designed the Explorer2 years ago, before it was "cool" to have a full nose, and the wide point forward. Then Slater won pipe on that 5'9 and everyone wanted wide noses and pulled in tails.

Where do you see the future of surfboard design headed?
FLEX

Of the current models you offer, which are your favorites and why?
Right now I'm coming off a shoulder injury so I've been riding a Beatle. Great flow in everything from 1ft-4ft waves. Also the Flextail is pretty exciting.
