Vasco Ribeiro becomes first Portuguese surfer to win a World Junior Title, and on his home turf.
Photos: ASP/Poullenot CONDITIONS: The pros had barely left town, or in some cases still hung around, when the ams began storming Portugal. The Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal and all the associated freesurfing action broadcast to young, impressionable surfers cast a glow on the Allianz ASP World Junior Championships, as clean, chest to shoulder-high waves graced the final day of competition at Ribeira D'Ilhas, one of Ericeira's most celebrated righthand pointbreaks (of which there are many).??HIGHLIGHTS: Few things are as pleasing to the human eye as fast, flowing, vertical backhand surfing on a set wave at a righthand pointbreak. And 18-year-old Mateia Hiquily (PYF) ruled Round 3 with mature technical backside hookage, beating Australian sensation Kai Hing via 9.80 to anchor the highest combined heat total of the event at that point, 18.80. "I'm really happy, but I can't shake the feeling that I didn't complete two waves, I kept falling at the end," Hiquily said. "This wave can be hard to surf on your backhand, if you get a flat one you're just going to do cutbacks all the way, so I was stoked to get those more punchy ones."??
OUTSTANDING PERFORMERS: "I have no words to describe this moment, I just want to thank everyone who's been supporting me," said marquee Men's champion Vasco Ribeiro (who was also crowned the ASP European Junior Champion before beating Brazilian dynamo Italo Ferrira here with his momentum-built 18.63 total). "It's been a long week, especially today, I surfed four times."
??In the Women's draw, Mahina Maeda's ASP World Junior Title was merely the natural result of winning every single heat she surfed in. At just 16 years old, Maeda plans to charge the 2015 WQS full-on, where she'll receive a wildcard in the highest seeded rounds of all the major events, potentially slingshotting her to 2016 WCT qualification.??
