New Online Community Connects Women Surfers, Promotes Ocean Health
June 8, 2011
PRESS RELEASE

CetoSurf.com celebrates its launch as part of World Ocean Day today. Ceto Surf is the first women's surf community to focus on ocean health issues: http://cetosurf.com

CetoSurf.com welcomes women of all ages, abilities and surfing styles who share a passion for the ocean, fun and friendship. By connecting and informing women surfers, Ceto seeks to foster greater access to the joy of waves and promote a healthy ocean environment.

CetoSurf.com offers http://cetosurf.com :
* a home page for all ocean lovers: featuring great interviews with the world's top women surfers, ocean activists, surf industry innovators and artists.
* a private, women only social networking community: the home page also serves as a portal to our women only community featuring member profiles, regional subgroups, ocean news and forums, meet up events, used equipment classifieds and surf product reviews.

Women's surf groups have grown in popularity as the women's surf population has exploded worldwide. But as CetoSurf.com founder Courtney Hayes discovered, most women run surf organizations are limited in geographical reach or don't offer more than meet ups and travel tips. "I saw all these amazing surfer women out there leading coastal conservation efforts and promoting women's health awareness, but there was no way to connect women surfers and all these important ocean health issues in one place. CetoSurf.com fills that void by offering women surfers a fun, non-competitive place to connect."

About CetoSurf.com founder Courtney Hayes
Courtney Hayes first learned to surf in Hawaii at the age of thirteen on a summer trip. When Courtney returned home to Gloucester, MA, it never occurred to her that she could surf anywhere in New England. "It wasn't until my sister started dating a surfer almost a quarter of a century later, that I discovered surfing again. Little did I know that it would change my life."

After two decades working as a documentary film producer and directing an independent film on marine conservation for PBS, Hayes attended the Harvard Kennedy School of Government to pursue a career in oceans policy. "I remember telling a Harvard admissions recruiter that my real dream was to become a pro surfer but was pursuing a different career path after a bruising defeat by 72 year old local surfing legend Kitty Pechet. The recruiter was not amused but I managed get into Harvard anyway."

By the time she graduated in May 2010, Courtney knew surfing would shape her future and began developing a concept for a women's surf community. "Surfers are natural environmentalists and there's an amazing amount of creativity and innovation happening in the surf industry right now. Surfing is exploding in popularity among women and I see a great future with women leading the way to a healthier ocean and more sustainable surf industry. I'm just so excited to be part of it!"
