Local kids battle it out at Ian Walsh's Menehune Mayhem event

CONDITIONS:
Contestable two- to three-footers. There was some chop in the water, but fun rights kept the kids smiling at Ian Walsh's 8th Annual Menehune Mayhem competition.
Monte Grant impressed everyone on the beach and finished 2nd overall in the Boys 12-13. He chucked the kitchen sink, exhibiting an array of throw tails and hard power gauges. Kid can surf. Kain Daly was a major standout all day, and on his backside he surfs well beyond his years. He finished 2nd in the Boys 16-17 division. |

HIGHLIGHTS: A monster turnout of 125 groms surfing in 44 heats. The kids got hooked up, from free breakfast, lunch, and beverages to tons of free surf swag. The Nocturnal Sound Krew spun the freshest tunes for those in attendance. A scavenger hunt on land kept the kids entertained and smiling. The contest also awards academics and featured tribute memorial awards for Andy Irons, Sion Milosky, Steve Cooney and Eric Diaz. QUOTES: "I started this contest to give the kids something else to look forward to," said Walsh, who grew up surfing at Ho'okipa Beach Park. "The year that I started it there was not too many events out here for the kids. It started as a small thing, and now it has snowballed into this crazy event."
