SURF NEWS Kolohe Andino wins Vans Pier Classic + Vans Pro Junior in peaky HB

CONDITIONS: Surf City, baby. From absolute onshore mushy crap to super-fun peaky Pier bowls -- and everything in between, for the duration of the event. The final day saw some fine HB three-to-the-beach waves, plenty of canvas for the international field of competitors.

HIGHLIGHTS:
Well, having a bunch of WTers show up to HB's southside at the end of March for a WQS four-star event is a highlight in and of itself. (Last year was a two star.) And despite the dyslexic weather, the surf was darned contestable. Especially for welter-weight aerial dudes, who milked the reform into all different manner of boost sections.

BROTHER: TAKE TWO
Adriano de Souza was on fire all event, but lost to Brother in the final by 0.1. "It's a little disappointing to come so close to the win but I'm really happy with my performance throughout this event," De Souza said. "I was happy to surf Huntington in amazing waves all week and I just have to say congratulations to Kolohe. Unbelievable; he's been surfing so well." Photo: Jeremiah Klein
And the judges were scoring: Last year's winner, Dylan Goodale, nailed an eight-plus ride for one big air reverse in the round of 64. Adriano de Souza, recently relocated to Dana Point, wailed all event. And yeah, Kolohe Andino did a couple airs, too.

OUTSTANDING PERFORMERS:
Kolohe Andino beat over a dozen dudes on his way to the podium, from the crusty, almost-40 Taylor Knox to fellow teenager and good buddy Luke Davis. No stranger to shifty, peaky, often gutless SoCal beachbreak, Brother surfed double-time, double-speed and took home both the pro and the junior division, a first for this event. "I was just stoked to be a part of these two finals," Andino said. "The guys were ripping." Other standouts include: deSouza, who nailed a 9.8 in the semifinal and almost took down Brother in the final.

QUOTES:
"I'm at a loss for words. I believed in myself, but once I actually made all of the heats, I can't believe it. All seven surfers that I surfed against in the Finals were amazing. I never even had time to get nervous because it feels like one big heat now." --Kolohe Andino

"I knew the wave was going to be good so I just pushed my limit and got the big air, I couldn't believe I made it. I was just flying and closed my eyes because I was so high, when I landed I thought, oh my god, I've completed this thing. Right at the end of the wave I did another little air and just couldn't believe I did two good airs here in Huntington." --Adriano de Souza on his 9.7 on Saturday

"My first wave was such a nugget and I was so surprised that it was so good that I totally farmed it, I could've won the heat on my first two waves. I'm definitely stoked to get second, but I would have really liked to win. It always hurts when you start strong and then you blow it, but it's good for my rating." --Conner Coffin
