Summertime in the South of France oozes a je ne sais quoi all its own.
Perhaps that's why the world's best women longboarders flock to Biarritz come July. That World Title race they run there this time of year might factor in too. Now in its fifth installment, the Roxy ASP WWLC is the deciding event in the race for the Women's World Longboard title -- an honor that's been bestowed upon Americans only thus far. |

If Round 1 was any indication, history could repeat itself in 2010. The original field of 32 was whittled to 16 today - 12 of whom hail from either Hawaii or mainland USA. American Leah Dawson dominated Day 1 proceedings, claiming the highest heat total - 15.25 - for a combination of progressive on-rail maneuvers and traditional nose-rides. Leah's up against 2008 ASP Women's World Longboard Champion Joy Monahan next. "It's a great confidence boost and it has set me up on the right track," Dawson said of her Round 1 victory. "I've got a tough line-up of competitors in front of me to get to the world title, but I am really passionate about it this year and I've been preparing really hard. I'd love to win, not just for myself but also for all the people who have given me support and love unconditionally." California girls Kaitlin Maguire and Cori Schumacher were also early standouts and reigning 2X World Champ Jennifer Smith sat near the top of the heap too. For complete results, read the press release, then take a peek at the action with captions from longboarding's leading lady and Roxy WWLC campaigner Kassia Meador. What's only just begun, could culminate in a crowning tomorrow. A mere 15 heats from now, the 2010 ASP Women's World Longboard Title will be won. A call on competition status will be made at 7:30am local time. MORE WOMENS SURFLINE HOME PAGE |
