In addition to beach events, the crew spent an afternoon in the pediatric department of Tripler Army Base Hospital visiting with terminally ill patients, their families and physicians. On another day, Mauli Ola dedicated a plaque near the Pipeline path to honor those that have lost their lives and/or dedicated their lives to the legendary break. The events helped raise awareness for CF and gave these special kids something unique that they'll likely treasure forever. Approximately 30,000 Americans have CF. The disease causes mucus to congeal and clog certain bodily organs, particularly the lungs, which makes breathing difficult and promotes infection. According to recent studies, saline in the air and water breaks down this congestion. With saltwater treatments, hospital visits are cut in half. You can check out the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpbEE4U5PuA There is no known cure for cystic fibrosis. The average life expectancy for those affected by the disease is 36.8 years.
