Some of surfing's biggest names came together over the last few weeks to share the joys of waveriding with children affected by Cystic Fibrosis (CF). And what better place to introduce surfing than its birthplace -- Hawaii.

Founded in 2008, the Mauli Ola Foundation ("Breath Of Life" in Hawaiian) provides fun and supportive surf experiences for those struggling with the life-threatening disease. This year, Kelly Slater, Jamie O'Brien and Buttons Kaluhiokalani were among two dozen pros on hand to help pass along the stoke.

SALTWATER THERAPY
The main goal of the Mauli Ola Foundation is to introduce surfing as a natural treatment for cystic fibrosis. The non-profit organization has worked with over 120 patients. Slater helps this kid get his sea-legs.
In addition to beach events, the crew spent an afternoon in the pediatric department of Tripler Army Base Hospital visiting with terminally ill patients, their families and physicians. On another day, Mauli Ola dedicated a plaque near the Pipeline path to honor those that have lost their lives and/or dedicated their lives to the legendary break. The events helped raise awareness for CF and gave these special kids something unique that they'll likely treasure forever.

Approximately 30,000 Americans have CF. The disease causes mucus to congeal and clog certain bodily organs, particularly the lungs, which makes breathing difficult and promotes infection. According to recent studies, saline in the air and water breaks down this congestion. With saltwater treatments, hospital visits are cut in half.

There is no known cure for cystic fibrosis. The average life expectancy for those affected by the disease is 36.8 years. Link to Mauli Ola Foundation's minisite at Surfline.com or visit http://www.mauliola.org/ for more information.
