SPANISH BIG-WAVE CONTEST GOES OFF
Quiksilver's 'La Vaca Gigante' sees huge surf; Gabe Davies takes win

CONDITIONS:
A VERY solid swell marched into La Vaca (Spanish for "The Cow") last week; some sets were 15-foot-plus with strong offshore winds. Fourteen big-wave-charger competitors and hundreds of spectators were on hand.

HIGHLIGHTS: Former Spanish champ Michel Velasco won the individual 'Biggest Wave' prize, but not without some competition from a hell-bent Axi Muniain. In one of the gnarlier sequences of the day, Pilou Ducalme narrowly escaped Vaca's death-by-rocks only to watch the nearby rescue jetski get served. The rider, thankfully, fared better than the ski.
