CONDITIONS: Perfect J-Bay conjures images of clean, corduroy-like swells marching down the legendary righthand point. And that's exactly what the surf was like for the final day of the Xcel Supertubes Showdown. With four- to six-foot lines on hand, the cold, wintry offshores were no matter for the four lucky finalists who earned an empty J-Bay lineup to themselves.

HIGHLIGHTS: Eventual Supertubes Showdown winner, Ryan Payne, and runner-up Warren Dean put on a thrilling show in the final when they battled wave-for-wave.

RYAN PAYNE WINS XCEL SUPERTUBES SHOWDOWN
Warren Dean, J Bay's barrel maestro, pulls into another perfect, green barrel.
But in the last few minutes, Payne whipped out a perfect 10-point ride to take a secure hold on the final, leaving fellow competitors Dean, Deon Lategan and Stan Badger in the dust. Not only has Payne earned himself an event title at J-Bay but now he'll receive a wildcard to compete in the Von Zipper trials which will eventually decide the wildcards for the ASP World Tour Billabong Pro J-Bay event.

OUTSTANDING PERFORMERS: Of course a 10-point ride in the final makes Payne an obvious candidate for being noticed as an outstanding performer but Dylan Lightfoot put on one of the most impressive shows of the event. Not only was the 14-year-old said to be charging the pumping J-Bay conditions but he was only 0.4 points short of making earning a spot in the final. Not bad for a kid.

QUOTES: "It's the best contest I have ever competed in. To have Supers as good as it was with just your mates in the water -- we were all winners! I just got lucky and ended up with the contest win as well." - Ryan Payne

"It's a really positive thing that there are a few of the youngsters invited as well. These guys are the ones who want to compete on the WQS and then hopefully the World Tour, so they can really benefit from an event like this as well." - Warren Dean

FINAL RESULTS:
1. Ryan Payne
2. Warren Dean
3. Deon Lategan
4. Stan Badger

BEST MOVE: Deon Lategan

BEST BARREL: Ryan Payne

WAVE OF THE DAY: Warren Dean
