It was an ideal day at Makaha.
Everything I expected to see as I left the cold and stormy North Shore. The wind was side/off shore and the West side sun was beating down as it always does. Delightfully predictable. I had called Rusty earlier to see what my chances were of getting a spot in a canoe. He laughed and said that somebody was getting carried past him on a stretcher and that there should be some openings.

But this event is different. It's something that you can't find out on the North Shore or anywhere else for that matter. No one is in this event for the money or keeping their sponsors happy -- it's all about pride. The things that these guys do in a four-man canoe you would think that there's US $1,000,000 on the line! And the casualty list will attest to the fact that there definitely are immediate consequences. But there's another aspect to this event: Even though the competitors are doing battle, the family element there was just as apparent. A father walking down the sand with a jersey on, a paddle in one hand and young son in the other. An old waterman walking his granddaughter down to the pounding shorebreak. You really get the feeling that this day is just as much about maintaining a legacy. As I sat under a tarp with friends I don't get to see enough and cracked my first green bottle I really felt like I was part of something special. It made me proud to be a waterman.
