Generally, you wouldn't really want to come to San Francisco in mid-May. The water's like 50 degrees, it's either howling onshore and sunny or pissy southwest wind and foggy. South swells are a hoax and NW groundswells are a memory.
 
But as we quickly found out last week at Save the Waves 2nd annual benefit at 111 Minna, if you like to party, this is the perfect time of year. It stays light late, so cocktail hour can stretch out into an entire evening - and you don't have to worry about missing any surf the next day, so you can go as hard as you want. (Which many people did, as you can see in the pics.)

This could be why the smart folks over at Save the Waves have their fundraiser in May, but I'm not sure.

It certainly worked out this year: $25,000 bucks raised for STW environmental programs. Record bar sales at 111 Minna (no mean feat). 600+ in attendance. SF surfer/activist Mark Massara given Save The Waves' 2008 Wave Saver Award for his tireless work to protect the California coast.

"It was overwhelming to see the breadth and depth of support at the event," said Save The Waves executive director Dean LaTourrette. "I think people recognize that the battle to protect natural coastline is truly a global fight, and affects surfers and coastal advocates alike. It's really gratifying to be able raise funds and awareness for our coastal programs, but also deliver a rip-roaring event for the Bay Area surf community."
