The 5th Annual Kokua Festival went off in Hawai'i recently at the Waikiki Shell on O'ahu. In the past, the musical based event created by Jack Johnson and his wife Kim has featured amazing artists like Ben Harper, Eddie Vedder, Willie Nelson, and of course Jack and his band.

WIth Jack Johnson as the annual headliner, Dave Matthews was this year's main featured artist, who performed an acoustic set with guitar master Tim Reynolds to a stoked, capacity crowd. Local island faves, Go Jimmy Go and Paula Fuga also performed, as well as guitarist/singer/songwriter Mason Jennings.

All proceeds from the environmentally-super conscious event went to the Kokua Hawai'i Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by Jack and Kim Johnson to support environmental education programs in the schools and communities of Hawai'i.

Brushfire Records' artist Mason Jennings - a clever and creative musician.
The funds raised from the Kokua Festival will be used to further support school recycling on Oahu, sponsor field trips, and roll out the new farm-to-school program, 'AINA In Schools. The foundation is excited to be expanding its community outreach with a sustainability film series and the new Plastic Free Haleiwa coalition. Other programs aimed to raise awareness and participation with the school kids of the islands were successfully introduced at this year's festival as well (see site at bottom for more), and the Kids Stage was always alive with energy and mini-performances by Jack and friends. In addition to the eclectic mix of live music, the Kokua Village let fans experience eco-friendly clothing from Patagonia, sustainable shoes from Simple Shoes, and organic yogurt from Stonyfield Farm. Kokua Festival attendees enjoyed local food and beverages, learned about products and services from green companies, viewed alternative energy demonstrations, participated in interactive games and crafts, and scored info about environmentally active groups from around the islands. My favorite souvenir t-shirt from this year's Kokua Festival reads, "GLOBAL WARMING IS SO HOT RIGHT NOW".

Monika Steinberg, Foam magazine Editor-at-Large had this to say: "The Kokua Festival was magical, especially on Saturday night during Jack Johnson's performance...the full moon was shining, the warm breeze of the night came through, making the tall palm trees sway and cooling down the thousands of fans. During Jack's last song, huge, warm raindrops started coming down and before the last verse the crowd was drenched, happy, and wanting more - which is exactly what Jack gave us - singing many more songs before the concert ended. This was the best Kokua Festival so far and I'm certain it will only get better from here."
