(PRESS RELEASE) Launching an international effort designed to empower the global surf community to provide aid to those stricken by Asia's tsunami, relief organization SurfAid International will benefit from The Quiksilver Foundation's recently established Nias Fund, supporting the relief efforts of SurfAid and the Indies Trader Company; the first beneficiaries of the new fund. While benefiting the entire region, The Nias Fund is named for Indonesia's Nias area, a well-known surf spot which, like so many Asian communities, has been affected by this natural disaster. This campaign's goal is to generate global, cross-industry, surf-related and public support for this international tragedy.

SurfAid International will be based in their Padang field office and will coordinate the relief efforts from there in collaboration with other aid organizations. The Padang office will support logistics, administration and cross-functional communication efforts. The Indies Trader -- sister boat to Quiksilver's The Crossing exploration -- will serve as SurfAid's mobile headquarters in Nias. Navigating this effort will be Indies Trader Company, principal and skipper Martin Daly, who has excellent knowledge of the regions and is best known for his skippering of Quiksilver's The Crossing that has traveled the globe serving as a research vehicle for the United Nation's Reef Check project.

SurfAid is focusing efforts on their core competencies and therefore targeting the outbreak of malaria, typhoid and cholera, says SurfAid International CEO Andrew Griffiths. "We are calling out to every surf-related entity and individual across the globe to provide support for SurfAid's effort. SurfAid's team of Doctors will be stationed on the boat to provide injury and illness treatment while working to create water purification in the region."

SurfAid's work in Nias will be led on site by Dr. Dave Jenkins. His team will include 3 other Doctors, a team of nurses an Indonesian malaria project manager who is a trained nurse with 25 years experience in the health sector and a staff of 6 facilitators and medical researchers, all of whom have Indonesian language skills and experience in the region, The Indies Trader brings its own water purification and independent communications systems. Along with this team, resources include mosquito nets, diagnostic equipment, water purification supplies, needles and much--needed immunizations.

With SurfAid's initial funding for this effort from The Quiksilver Foundation, its plan is to engender the support of boardriding companies and concerned citizens throughout the world. The New Zealand government has committed government dollars to match those raised privately by SurfAid and the Nias Fund.
