On Friday, July 27 -- in the midst of the U.S. Open mayhem at Huntington Beach, CA -- Sofia Mulanovich stuck her hands in some wet cement.

Not the cause of some juvenile prank, Sofia was actually being inducted, along with three others, into the 2007 Surfers' Hall of Fame.

"I was super happy," she says. "I remember last year, when Layne Beachley was inducted, I saw that it was such a big thing and an honor."

Sofia follows in the footsteps of past female inductees like Layne, Lisa Andersen and Jericho Poppler.

"When I look at Lisa and Layne, they have so many World Titles," she points out. "I only have one."

With gouges like this, it's easy to see why Sofia's won one World Title so far. She was unable to defend her 2006 U.S. Open win this year but she'll undoubtedly be going after World Title number two. Photo: ASP/Covered Images/Sean Rowland
Sure, to put it modestly, but 24-year-old Sof's not only the first ever Peruvian surfer to win an ASP World Tour event but she's the very first South American, man or woman, to win an ASP World Title. Those are some pretty big firsts. Besides, the Punta Hermosa, Lima, Peru native is a full-fledged celebrity in her country -- the type of celebrity status that not many of our American World Champs hold.
"Sometimes when people talk about you, it's not always accurate. But this was so accurate, about my feelings and everything. I almost started crying."

Those are only a few of the reasons Sofia was chosen to immortalize her handprint in a major Huntington Beach sidewalk right beside the other inductees, legends Al Merrick, Martin Potter and Bruce Irons. "Being there with those guys -- it was a really special group," she says. The ceremony took place afterwards as onlookers watched the four received their honors.

"When they talked about me, they knew so much stuff," Sof says of the presentation. "Sometimes when people talk about you, it's not always accurate. But this was so accurate, about my feelings and everything. I almost started crying and then Lisa [Andersen] came up and spoke about me -- she's my hero. It was really emotional."
