PRESS RELEASE
The Southwest Conference Explorer Season held at Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach took advantage of the minor southwest swell in the water that was hitting the southern California coast. Waist to chest high peaks came through for the competitors providing contestable conditions all day. HIGHLIGHTS OF SOUTHWEST EXPLORER EVENT #2 -La Jolla's Jacob Szekely broke through claiming his first NSSA victory. Jacob nailed strong turns in all of his heats to take out the Men's final in a close decision over his high school surf coach and mentor Rick Takahashi. -Jake Marshall was a multiple division winner looking extremely sharp in the Crystal Pier peaks. He clearly had the rhythm and confidence in his surfing winning his second straight in the Boys division and taking it up another notch triumphing in the upper age Juniors bracket in the all San Diegan final. Jake now sits in a comfortable first position in Boys ratings. -Local boy Ryland Rubens was the surfer to beat in his home turf and he proved this true in the Menehuene 12 & under division. He surfed outstandingly in familiar waters with polished style and solid turns winning the final by a 5-point margin. -Jake Marshall's younger brother Nick has made a quite an impression in the opening events of the 2011-12 season. After taking his first win in the Explorer opener at HB's Ninth Street, Nick came out swinging for the fences at Crystal Pier. The 10-year-old was on fire posting the first perfect 10 of his young promising career, he scored the highest heat totals of the event (18.0 in the Super Grom semis) and he sealed his second straight victory in the Super Groms increasing his lead in the ratings. He also dropped the highest combined score of all the finals collecting a 16.5 two-wave total in the Super Grom final. Hats off to Nick! -In the NSSA West Coast Women's categories, Kulia Doherty just keeps winning. After an impressive victory at the HB Pier Open last weekend, Kulia displayed another solid surfing performance at Crystal Pier taking the win in the Explorer Womens. Is she on a mission to win multiple titles at the Nationals in 2012? It sure seems that way as she's been crushing the competition! -Kylie Loveland has opened up the 2011-12 season on a roll taking her second straight victory in the Explorer Girls. The defending conference champion in both the Explorer Girls and Women's divisions will build a commanding lead in the Girls ratings. -Rick Takahashi has been on a tear recording his second straight double-double taking out both the Masters and Seniors finals. Tak now takes a commanding lead in both the Masters and Seniors standings with his undefeated status in both divisions. Bob Higgins, a newcomer to NSSA comp this season, took the win in Super Seniors while Rick "Rockin Fig" Fignetti scored his second straight win in the Duke division. In the Longboard, Christian Stutzman claimed his first win of the season in a tight heat over Nathan Thompson. San Diego surfers take command again!: In a repeat scenario of event #1, San Diego County surfers ruled the winner's podium for the second Explorer event scoring nine victories out of the 12 competitive divisions! The NSSA Southwest Conference is proud to have support from Nike 6.0, Huntington Surf and Sport, Java Point, Surfing Magazine, Sex Wax, Channel Islands and Sugar Shack. The NSSA is a member of Surfing America, the ISA-recognized National Governing Body for Surfing in the United States. COMING UP IN CALI: The Gold Coast Conference will have a doubleheader weekend on September 24-25 at Ventura Harbor.
