Oscar Moncada died in the early hours today in a Puerto Escondido hospital. He was 34 years old. Surfline frequent contributor and local filmmaker Jaciel Santiago informed us of the tragedy, while local media and posts on social media from Oscar’s friends confirmed the reports.

"Such a hard loss," said longtime Surfline contributor Edwin Morales, who's been shooting Moncada in Puerto and beyond for years. "Not only a friend, but also a cousin and I loved him like a brother. We spend so much time together in and out of the water. Hard to articulate words right now."

Apparently, Oscar was cruising with his friends in a white Mercedes Benz when, on Federal Route 200 in Pochutla, 20 miles from Puerto Escondido, they collided with a truck heading toward them. It is not clear which driver crossed the center dividing line.

Two of Oscar’s friends, local surfer Diego Oropeza and tattoo artist Waldo Rendón, died immediately while Oscar was taken out of the wreckage by some witnesses who were passing by. Paramedics stabilized Oscar and took him to a Puerto Escondido hospital in critical condition. Once there, Oscar was going to go through surgery, and it is still not clear whether he died during surgery or before it.

There’s no other information on the exact cause of death, or how the accident occurred.

Eerily, Oscar’s last Instagram story shows him sitting and smiling in the back seat of the Mercedes Benz.

You shouldnt show the scene of his death like that, with the fire blazing. Its disrespectful of his family and it doesnt add anything to the story anyways.

Unbelievable. As a young surfer from North Carolina, I had never seen massive waves like the ones that break in zicatela. I had to watch the pros and the locals to find my place in the line up. Always complementing the leaders of the pack on their bombs and asking for advice. Oscar was literally one of two that gave positive advice and eventually that advice led me to get some bombs of my own (almost seven years after our first encounter). Prayers to the family and thank you.
