STEPH GILMORE'S AMERICAN WALKABOUT: BIENVENIDOS A MEXICO
Fleeing a wave-starved California, Steph takes off for Baja with Taylor Knox and friends close in tow
After spending a not-so-swell-rich summer in California, I started to get a little hungry for waves. It was my last week in the United States and there was a little pulse of south swell coming so in the spirit of any good California trip, I decided to head down south of the border and hit up the many pointbreaks of Baja.
In the past, when I've gone deep into Baja Sur, I've flown down because that seems to make the most sense when you're taking such a short trip. But this time I thought I'd get the full experience -- round up a group of friends, pack up the oversized SUV, drive across the border, checking out all the towns en route. It's kind of scary in the north right now, especially Tijuana, but we made it through that part, hitting the long road south.
While nearly every surfer from California already knows the routine, driving down was a completely new experience for me. The entire trip was one giant adventure, and to make things even more exciting, we lined up with Taylor Knox for some right point action and plenty of desert roaming.
