BILLABONG PRO MUNDAKA: DAY FOUR
Flat Atlantic Ocean forces another layday; possible restart Friday
As the amended saying goes, the rain in Spain falls mainly all over the place. Sandwiched in between the Pyrenees and the Atlantic, this corner of Europe is especially subject to wild weather swings. It can be 70 degrees and sunny one second, and pouring and 40 degrees 10 minutes later.
Thursday saw plenty of rain in Mundaka, as all the pros have gone into hibernation, hoping for some swell. Which looks possible for tomorrow. Check back.

SURFLINE'S OFFICIAL BILLABONG PRO MUNDAKA FORECAST, effective 10/08/2009
--Jonathan Warren
BRIEF OVERVIEW: Small bump of NW swell for Fri/Sat. Better NW swell lining up for late Sunday through Tuesday morning, but conditions are suspect.
FRIDAY 9th
SWELL/SURF: New, but small bump of NW swell slowly fills in throughout the day. Look for knee-waist+ waves to show through the lower tide window in the afternoon. Best with the incoming tide push with occasional waves up to chest high before the tide gets too full for the small swell.
WIND/CONDITIONS: Light to moderate West-NW winds all day.
SATURDAY 10th
SWELL/SURF: NW swell slowly eases throughout the day with a tiny NW windswell mixing in. Morning high tide swamps out the small surf. Knee-thigh occasional waist high lines show during the lower tide in the afternoon.
WIND/CONDITIONS: Moderate West-NW winds.
SUNDAY 11th
SWELL/SURF: New WNW groundswell will build in slowly with small WNW windswell mixing in. Starting out basically flat on the high tide with knee-waist occasional chest high waves showing over the late afternoon as the tide drops and the swell fills in more.
WIND/CONDITIONS: Light/variable to light westerly winds in the morning with a light northerly wind over the afternoon.
MONDAY 12th
SWELL/SURF: The swell is gradually shifting from WNW to NW and fills in further, topping out later in the day with a better NW angle and lower tide. Look for mainly waist-head high surf with occasional set waves that are slightly overhead, strongest late in the day. The early morning may offer something, but the swell may be a little too west and the tide a little too high. High tide tops out mid-day to slow things down.
WIND/CONDITIONS: Increasing NE veering ENE winds, becoming breezy into the afternoon.
TUESDAY 13th
SWELL/SURF: NW swell holds in the early morning with more waist-head+ surf before fading. High tide fills in through the morning and tops out by the early afternoon to slow things down. New, but smaller West swell shows and wraps in.
WIND/CONDITIONS: Moderate East-ENE winds.
DISCUSSION + LONG-RANGE FORECAST
A recent storm/fetch (up around the northern rim of the North Atlantic between Greenland and Iceland) has pushed out a small pulse of NW swell (315-325) for Fri/Sat. This swell will slowly fill in over Friday, providing mainly knee-waist high surf through the afternoon low tide at Mundaka with occasional waves up to chest high on the tide push. However, the high tide moving in will eventually swamp out the small swell. The swell peaks Friday night before slowly easing throughout Saturday. High tide Saturday morning will swamp out the small swell. Then look for knee-thigh occasional waist high lines to show during the lower tide window Saturday afternoon. This swell fades out through Saturday night. Conditions Fri/Sat - High pressure to the south will set up light-moderate West-NW flow on Friday and moderate West-NW winds on Saturday.
Further out; we have a couple developing frontal LOWs in the western North Atlantic, one of which will sweep toward Iceland as the other will eventually setup under Greenland. Meanwhile, a ridge of high pressure will extend over the Azores and off the west coast of Spain/Portugal. This HIGH is expected to gradually slide toward the northeast over Spain/France by Sunday the 11th before continuing toward the northeast early next week.
The first LOW has recently developed to the east of Newfoundland, but is now tracking toward Iceland. This storm will push out a WNW shifting NW groundswell (290 shifting 325 deg) for Sunday the 11th - Tuesday the 13th. WNW energy will begin to build over Sunday, starting out slow and building from knee to waist to chest high into the late afternoon as the tide drops and the swell fills in more (strongest late). *The initial angle of this swell will have a lot of west in it and will need to expend some energy to wrap into Mundaka. The swell fills in further on Monday and the swell angle gradually becomes a better angle for Mundaka shifting from WNW to NW, thus more energy is able to get in. On Monday, we're looking for the strongest surf to show over the late afternoon/evening with peaking NW swell and the low tide window. Look for surf mainly in the waist-head high range with occasional set waves that are slightly overhead. *FYI - The early morning on Monday may offer something, but the swell may be a litt
