HANG LOOSE SANTA CATARINA PRO: DAY FOUR
Slater test-drives quiver as contest remains on hold
A second consecutive lay day has been called for the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro, with only two-to-three foot waves on tap at Praia Vila this morning.
Most of the top pros took to the water anyway - many in the waves right out front; some (including Kelly Slater and Jeremy Flores) down the road a bit at a spot called Porto Beach. The swell was focusing a better in this area, and Slater used the fun, shoulder-high surf to sample three boards during a spirited, aerial-filled session.
The models are projecting some solid pulses to begin tomorrow and hold through Thursday, so with only two days of competition remaining event organizers decided to go into a stalling pattern for now and finish in the best conditions possible. (The contest waiting period runs through Sunday, July 5.)
"The winds have calmed since yesterday but the surf has dropped as well," Perry Hatchett, ASP Head Judge, said. "We've called competition off for today, but are tracking some swells that look to be coming from a better direction over the next couple of days so we'll be back tomorrow morning."
Officials will meet on the beach Wednesday at 7:30am (6:30 EST) to assess conditions for a possible round-three start. Stay tuned....
