JADSON ANDRE WINS BILLABONG PRO SANTA CATARINA
Brazilian rookie punts past Kelly Slater to shake up ASP ratings
When Surfline named Jadson Andre a Rising Star last year, it put a relatively unknown Brazilian amongst the likes of Jordy Smith, Dusty Payne and Owen Wright. But with his victory over Kelly Slater today at the Billabong Pro Santa Catarina, Andre trumped them all, becoming the first in the bunch to win an ASP World Tour event.
In fact, Andre is the first countryman to win a WT event in Brazil since...well, the ASP can't even remember. This was evidenced by the local fans' reaction after time ticked away on Slater and Jadson emerged victorious. The ski driver picked him up and handed him a tall Skol beer (where was he holding it the entire 35 minute final?), which Andre poured, slugged and splashed all the way to the beach. On the sand he was hoisted on shoulders of friends and paraded around the beach, instantly a celebrity. The webcast announcers even eluded that tomorrow could be a national holiday in Brazil.
