TUBE OF THE WINTER?
Kalani Chapman muscles his way through a heaving second-reef Pipe bomb
Quicktime | Windows Media Player

It was only a matter of time till Kalani Chapman got the tube of the year at Pipe. The hard-charging young goofyfoot is the brother of infamous Pipe charger Sean Briley and nephew of legendary Owl Chapman; the North Shore runs in his blood and Pipeline is home sweet home.

On November 16th, he paddles out at maxing Second Reef on a three-inch thick 9'6" rhino chaser, shaped by uncle Owl. Story goes, he was supposed to wait for the swell of the year to paddle out on it. He sits outside long enough to get the set of the swell, angles into the beast, and holds his line through the meanest section in the business, flying out with gobs of spit. The wave is talked about for weeks as one of the heaviest in years.

Almost a month later, Kalani blazes through the Pipe Trials with a perfect 10 and two nines. He beats Slater, not once but twice. And advances to the finals, finishing fourth in deteriorating conditions. Hometown hero, to be sure.
