SUBMITTING TO SURFLINE VIDEO

Requirements if you are going to send an edited clip:

1)The clip should be around 3 minutes long, no longer than 4 minutes. If you are not going to output to tape, output at 320x240, 29.97 fps. If you don't want to deal with compression, output the file as a Quicktime movie with a datarate of 600Kbps or so. File size should be around 20mb to 50mb. If you are doing the compression, then output as both a Quicktime and a Windows Media file with a datarate of 300Kbps (file size of 6mb to 12mb). We recommend using the Sorenson 3 Pro codec (do not use the H.264 codec for Quicktime because of capabilities issues). Also, let us know if you have Sorenson Squeeze (which we recommend), we can email you the compression templates that we use.

If all of this is too much, you can also output the video to a mini-DV tape and send it to us.

The easiest way to get us a large file is by FTP (which we prefer, contact us for access information). If you don't have an FTP program, here are some suggestions: PC: www.smartftp.com and Mac: www.panic.com/transmit.

2) Please make sure that all credits (including sponsors) are at the end of the clip.

3) You must use music that you have rights to. Easiest way to get rights-free music is to contact a friend who has a band. Bands love exposure. You can also come up with original stuff by using a program like Garageband to crank out some beats. If you don't have any music, check out our music database here: www.surfline.com/music and let us know which song you want. This list is growing so check back often.

4) Try to use reasonably quick edits (but not brain-seizure-fast edits) and please don't use crazy graphics or transitions.

5) Editing is very important. It's better to have 30 seconds of insane rides than 3 minutes with some ok rides. What we don't want to see, unless the maneuver or wave is sick: closeouts, incomplete maneuvers, shaky camera, far away shots (not zoomed in properly), average surfers, ugly chicks, etc...

6) Email me a description of the clip, any credits and where you want the clip to link to (website, email). Great video clips will get viewed by 50,000 people in a month so be sure to promote whatever projects you are working on (DVD, website, sponsor, etc.)

7) We recommend using titles or an intro title to name the surfers and/or places in the clip. It is OK to name high profile surf spots (HB Pier, Pipeline, Rincon, Lower Trestles, Steamer Lane, Sebastian Inlet, etc.) DO NOT NAME sensitive or secret surf spots; use a general description such as West Coast, Southern California, and Caribbean. No big deal if you don't use titles.

8) Call or email Marc Beaty if you have any questions. 714-374-0556, Ext 30, marc@surfline.com
