Cory Lopez on his first wave during an historic session at "The New Cape St. Francis," somewhere in Africa. Cory went to this spot over a month earlier but had to bail before he scored it -- but he vowed to return. This is his first wave during that return session, and the first time the wave has ever been recorded on video.

6: TEAHUPOO TOW SESSION HIGHLIGHTS

April 26th saw the biggest swell of the year hit Teahupoo. Garrett MacNamara, Dylan Longbottom, Jamie O'Brien, Danny Fuller and more spent the afternoon towing into giant barrels after the Trials were put on hold due to huge surf.

7: THE HUNT: IN THE EYE

Follow Cory Lopez and Alek Parker through the 2008 Hurricane Season on the East Coast. Tropical Storm Fay was a tricky little storm to follow. We knew that the southern eye wall was our only chance for clean surf. The decision was made to follow the southern eye wall as it moved up the coast and watch as the conditions changed from victory at sea to spitting barrels.

17: AIR TAHITI NUI/VON ZIPPER TRIALS: DAY ONE
December, 2008
Day One of the Teahupoo Trials saw 10-12 feet with occasional 15-foot bombs. Light offshore. Southwest swell. The afternoon picked up to 15- to 18 feet -- too big to paddle. Cory Lopez, 2001 Billabong Pro Tahiti champ, said, "I've been coming here for 8 or 9 years and it is only the third time I have seen it this good in competition. It's an honor to be part of the trials and I really want to get in to the main event."

18: DA HUI BACKDOOR SHOOTOUT HIGHLIGHTS

This year's Shootout saw three days of epic Pipe and Backdoor. The no-elimination format allowed all surfers multiple attempts to get the highest point total throughout the event. It was a tight battle down to the last day but Jaime O'Brien edged out Bruce Irons to take home $50,000.

19: BATTLE OF THE BANKS GOES OFF

What a day for a contest... The surf at Rodanthe was kegging! The Outer Banks Pro Battle of the Banks was blessed with overhead northeast swell from a powerful low pressure system in the NW Atlantic and straight offshore winds all day long. Pretty much heaving tube rides were the only option for competitors as contest director Wes Laine encouraged deep pits not punts... but no one was complaining.
