There are a number of waves in the world most surfers can't even imagine riding. The Right is one of 'em.

In March of 2015, young West Oz pro Jacob Willcox broke his ankle. (It happens.) Since then, he's been out of the water for close to 11 weeks. (As expected.) Kid's got a long, painful rehab process in front of him. (Naturally.) But he hopes to be back in the water by August. (Cross your fingers.) Until then, here's enough grade-A footage to keep his name relevant and on your radar. (Because one day, you're probably gonna want him on your Fantasy Surf Team.)

If it's not the best surf on Earth, then at the very least it's the best surf the WSL has seen all year. And the variety, the color, the general vibe... you'd have a hard time picking a more ideal surfing environment. The RVCA team puts their signatures on that statement with this montage.

Damo tuning in his tube riding skills in West Oz's finest slabs.

Cyclops is not exactly makeable. It's not a beachbreak. Yet Bradley Norris is so cozy, he charges it like one. Cyclops is not exactly funny. It's not Louis C.K. Yet Bradley Norris is so at home, he seems to be cracking jokes amidst the treachery. Cyclops is not exactly friendly. It's not a bar. Yet Bradley Norris is so comfortable, he kicks back and drinks beer in the barrel.

It's cool how this clip starts out looking like nighttime footage, then you realize it's actually just shadowing from the lip. It's cool how the slow-motion effect makes you believe this is a normal ocean wave, then you realize it takes a fully strapped jet-ski, hard-earned local knowledge and otherworldly courage to access it. It's cool how the spot is named after a mythical monster, then you realize the metaphor is quite accurate.

That's all that's cool. The rest is intensely, swelteringly... terrifying. That's probably why no one's riding it.

Unlike last year, we have yet to see any amazing North Point or Box freesurfs from West Oz. The dudes have been spending a bunch of time at the contest site, using the side-onshores to their full advantage.

Julian, Adriano, Gabriel, Wilko advance.

We were getting kinda tired of seeing all those sweet, sultry dream sequences at North Point since the WSL landed in West Oz this year. All that textbook surfing, all those idyllic waves, all those clean conditions... It was almost starting to look too scripted, too homogenized. We know for a fact that North Point gets a lot uglier, a lot more violent than what we've been shown lately. So thanks to Jay Davies and pals for reacquainting us with that punk edge.
