This isn't your mother's contest. Partnered with The O'Neill Mission event staff, competitors traverse the wild and rugged west coast of France in search of the best uncrowded waves. And when they're found - click, click - cameras roll, video is edited, and a final highlight reel is judged by their peers.

Julian Wilson took that honor this year, syncing up rap beats with mind-boggling 360 spins and a seemingly endless aerial assault. Adam Robertson won the first ever 'Spirit of the Mission' award for embracing spirit of adventure of The Mission in its entirety, and tied former WCT giant Cory Lopez for second place.

The powerful French goofyfoot made a lot of noise in Hawaii this winter. This is what happened when he got back home.

They came for the waves. They stayed for the pastries. They, meaning the Quiksilver Young Guns. A whole crew of them descended upon France from places near and far -- but mostly far. We're talking New Zealand, Mexico, America, Indonesia, Australia, Mars, etc. All here, in France, raiding the banks and bakeries with the type of excitement and enthusiasm that only youth knows.

With incredible waves, solid industry and easy travel to other killer surfing outposts, France is bound to produce at least a couple world-class surfers every couple years. This kid, Charly Quivront, is the latest revelation, shown here at home in France and abroad in Central America. Check him. He's legit.

Here we have Nelson Cloarec -- French born ripper, as he drops in on a heavy Atlantic winter swell.

There is no sense of wonder whenever Gabriel Medina's name is attached to a video clip -- you know it's bound to hold some magic. Although his part here's a little shorter than desired, you can still marvel at the ollie over the boogie boarder (2:12) or the extended layback immediately after. Nonetheless, Medina is just icing on the cake, as Wiggolly Dantas shows why he'll probably finish within the top 15 this year.

Dane Reynolds has never needed a jersey to surf his best, especially in perfect beachbreak, like we see here. France is great like that.

Florence, Fanning, Flores, Toledo, Medina, Andino, Smith, Wilkinson...the list goes on. Here's a look backwards as we're about to look forwards.

If there was ever a more delectable beachbreak in the world than Hossegor, God kept that shit for himself. Obligingly offshore. Gregariously green. Hypnotically hollow. And just a lil' overhead -- an average surfer would have his mind blown this day. A good surfer would go to bed happy. And a pro surfer/local like Joan Duru? He just runs it.

This year's Da Hui Backdoor Shootout in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Duke Kahanamoku Invitational saw some solid conditions and was graced with some of the best swell to hit the North Shore all winter. Everyone was charging and there wasn't a single wave to be wasted.

Kelly Slater and Jason Andre judge John John Florence's high-scoring heats at the 2014 Quiksilver Pro France.

Florence, Fanning, Burrow, Andino, Durbidge, Smith, and Kerr have a go at some French toobs during some down time from competition.

John John Florence's workout may seem a little unconventional, but then again John John isn't your conventional surfer. He's on a different program and level than most and that's how we like it.

After spending many weeks out of the water due to back pains, Duvi returns and obliterates the beachbreaks of Southwest France.

Indar Unanue joins Joan Duru and Maxime Huscenot in hollow righthand barrels.

Apparently France has been pumping, like really pumping. Much less surprising than that is the fact that former World Junior Champion Maxime Huscenot has been absolutely ripping. Maxime is joined by Vincent Duvignac in this clip to create four minuets of pure viewing pleasure.

Marc Lacomare travels through Mexico, Costa Rica and France hunting for good waves and high adventure.

Benjamin Sanchis, Shane Dorian, Jeremy Flores take advantage of insane European winter.

The young 'CT talent stomps countless aerial maneuvers during his time spent in France.

"Intimate mumblings from a traveling, surf-stoked, positive energy seeker. Take what you will from these words--they are merely just that, words, my take on what this all means from the small to the big. Some of you will be quick to judge, and that's fine. Some of you will ponder, and that's just fine also. For me, it's all a positive, creative outlet from helping make and being part of these little films to writing these random notes. I'm here for what I consider to be quite a short length in time, so I'm enjoying the ride and trying to take it all in. Look up at that burning beacon of hope in the sky. That vitamin D provider and sun worshiper's god. In all its glory it is slowly dying, it is after all, a star. One day when it flares Earth will be no more as it gets consumed by its fiery grasp. On another scale entirely dark energy is ever increasingly pushing and speeding our universe into a cold oblivion. Super cosmic stuff, I know, but this stuff fascinates me and puts a whole new spin on the meaning of life. So when your alarm goes off on an early winter's dawn and you wander outside into the clear starlight darkness have a look around you and you can't help but feel for just those few accountable seconds that winter's cold grasp has caused time and space to just stop. It's easy to get caught up in day to day life stresses and problems but the big picture continues regardless and marches to the sound of its own drum and if you look up and around you with an open mind and a willingness to just be you will be overruled with an emotional connection that will infuse your daily life. Now take that same state of mind into the sea and ride a few waves and tell me it doesn't feel good..."
