just got off the phone with continental baggage agent. they told me they ARE allowing boards on flights to san jose and liberia, COSTA RICA. $100 per bag of 2 boards. it sucks but still worth having equipment you are comfortable on...

I flew United. I paid $175 to send 2 boards to Hawaii on the way out. On the way back, United opened my bag in Honolulu and wanted to charge me $175 per board. What a rip off!! I talked to a supervisor, and they only charged me $175.

Recently flew spirit airlines. Contacted airlines customer service to confirm I could fly with my board. Spirit stated it was only a bag fee of 19.00 each way. At the airport I was charged $75 each way. The teller told me that you could only pay the surfboard fee at the airport and that only the airport desk has correct billing information. I was told the $150 was for special care. Yet both legs of the trip I chased my board around the carousel as it bounced off corners and clipped people's legs

These amounts are insane, its not like the boards are an odd shape and wont fit. On the other hand we have to wrap them so the gorillas wont ding them.So do we get any insurance with that fee or are we on our own to deal with the gapping holes they inflict.

I flew on United Airlines from Kauai to LAX on June 11th. United charged $175 for each board. Ended up paying $350 one way...same deal on the way home. Total board charges $700. CRAZY. What can we do?

Taca rates just went up to $125 per bag, 2 boards allowed. Tax is added from El Salvador to LAX, so $141 on that leg.
Joey 07/01/2009 09:49 PM
I just came back from Hawaii from Cali and it is 175 per board not bag. However if you get a super cool dude they will go per bag, the guy actually said," It just depends who you get" F United. Unfortunately, because of the ridiculous price I only brought one board and needed that 6'3 rounded pin for an off season nw at pipe!!
Bud Peppe 06/25/2009 04:47 PM
Please update your list to include that COPA AIRLINES also has an embargo in effect from July 1st - August 31st. COPA DOES NOT ACCEPT SURFBOARDS DURING THIS TIME!!!!!!!!

Anyone have any information on Aviacsa airlines? Their website is really bad and I can't get a hold of them via their posted phone number.

anyone know what Spirit Airlines charges? i can fly Taca outta NYC or Spirit out of Atlantic City. similar flight price but my decision will be made based on the board bag fee - for 2 boards in 1 bag.
Justin 06/22/2009 01:01 PM
I'm flying to Nicaragua in August via Aviacsa and Taca airlines. Does anyone have any information on boardbag fees on Aviacsa? Also, if you take more than 2 boards (I want to take 3) in one bag on Taca do they charge extra or just not let it go through? I'd appreciate any help on this.
Andrew 06/14/2009 12:09 PM
Kenya Airways: FREE. 2 x 23kg bags. One of which can be surfboards. I fit 4 boards into the bag... happy days! Extra bags cost £130 Extra weight (up to 32kg per bag) is around £30 each

Continental Airlines Embargo does not apply when flying to San Jose or Liberia. The agent claimed $100/ bag maximum of 2 boards. Going next week, will probably still get worked over since they are the worst.
sean d 06/06/2009 02:24 PM
flying continental to nicaragua next week. when i bought the ticket in january there was nothing about an excess baggage embargo on the website, and now its all over their website and this one. good thing my brother lives there and has some extra boards, but i wanted to bring one down for the locals and now i cant. the airlines are really starting to screw with us. oh well, at least there is some south swell headed that way.
