WOMEN BACKSIDE 360 SURF TIP WITH CARISSA MOORE

It's not everyday you get to rap out with arguably the biggest name in women's surfing, let alone solicit a few slivers of advice on how to add a new move to your repertoire from one of the world's best.

Actually, it's damn near impossible. But Surfline managed to pull it off, stealing a few moments with an otherwise very busy Carissa Moore (the girl is balancing the demands of being a first semester senior at Punahou and her ever-growing surfing obligations, such as her recent qualification to the 2010 ASP World Tour).
So we asked the 17-year-old for some pointers on executing a backside three -- the perfect way to add a little flare to your surfing when those mushy shoulders or crumbly lips approach, and without much effort at all. Consider it low risk, high reward. Odds are you probably won't make it look as smooth as Carissa at first, but, hey, the fun's in trying, right? Here's what she had to say:

STEP 1: "You want to look for a section that is sort of crumbling, and approach it, looking up the wave, with your shoulders open, as if you were going to do a backside turn."
"When you hit the lip, give your back foot one more push to add some flare."
-- Carissa Moore

STEP 2: "As you bottom turn into it and are riding up the face of the wave, keep your body centered over your board but begin to shift your weight a little more on your back foot. You can grab your rail or do it with your hands free."

STEP 3: "Use the lip of the wave to push you back towards land. When you hit the lip, give your back foot one more push to add some flare, then shift your weight to your front foot and ride it out. The main thing is to stay with your board and rotate."

can any surfer pull off something similar to a 'rock n roll', or is it physically impossible?

Ally-oops are not just ariel maneuvers in skateboarding. You can do an ally-oop 5-0 for example. Ally-oop means heading towards the lip going one direction, either frontside or backside and then rotating in the opposite direction. whether it's a grind or an air. In this case it's surfing so I think what "erik" said sounds like a better description of Carrisa's maneuver. From a skater perspective it is "Ally-oopish" though. ;)

I agree I wanna see a trick tips vid with her explaining. Go Carissa! Also, just an idea for future trick tips vids, could you guys make one for riding out when you're going backwards?

It's not an alleyoop because her board never leaves the face. Alley-oops are aerial manuevers.

should be a backside bottom turn into a frontside off the top

Isn't she actually spinning frontside? I realize she is approaching the lip backside but she's not spinning backside. Isn't this an ally-oop frontside 270? It would be if I was on a skateboard. I'm just sayin'. Sick btw.

mushy is good. get in front of a slow wedge. i found that i was given the most clearance to fully rotate behind me when I started my turn at the very base of the wave, that is, i would kick up towards the lip when i was almost bogged past the point of where i would normally do my bottom turn.Kick off your fins/toes.i would try from going 8 oclock to 2 oclock in one kick, and then fall/slide into the rest of the rotation.it's usually a last ditch attempt at a move when there is no wall in front
