THE HEAT IS ON
Arias and Nicely win Billabong East Coast Wahine Champs in tiny surf

The 9th Annual East Coast Wahine Championships was held August 20-21, 2005 in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. Nearly 175 wahines traveled from Maine to Florida, California and even Hawaii to compete in the all female competition. Contestants ranged in age from 3 to 58 years old, and surfing divisions included Pro/Am shortboard, Pro/Am longboard, bodyboard, and novice. Conditions were trying with triple digit temperatures and a high-pressure system that kept waves at a minimal one to two feet all weekend, but the wahines persevered with through delayed starts and schedule changes to make another memorable year.

Believe it or not Kelly Nicely took her third Pro Longboard title! That's three in a row for the 27-year-old NC State college student from Newport, NC. After spending last semester studying abroad in New Zealand, Kelly developed a taste for larger waves and was unsure of her ability to grovel in the small conditions offered at this year’s event. But she was yet again unstoppable, beating out runner up and longboard legend Mimi Munro, local favorite Erin Whittle, and 2001 champ Lauren Hill.

Kelly also took second place in the Pro Shortboard, but she couldn't keep ahead of Billabong team rider and ECWC cover girl Connie Arias of Melbourne Beach, Florida. Connie’s image was placed on the event poster and when she wasn’t surfing, she was signing autographs. Rounding out the division was Florida’s Christa Alves in third place and Ainslee Wallace of Virginia Beach in fourth.
