ANOTHER GONE
Huntington Beach legend Mike Morgan passes away
Mike Morgan, longtime Huntington Beach regularfoot, contest commentator and HSS surf shop employee, died of natural causes at his home on Sunday, June 5th. He was 44.
A former NSSA National Team member in 1980, Morgan is known for his solid surfing at the hyper-competitive HB Pier as well his trademark green and yellow shortboard, but he's perhaps most widely known for his easy-going contest announcing. He started 20 years ago with NSSA contests and worked his way through the US Open, which he did up till last year, the Boost Mobile Pro, and many of the grom contests that come through grom-crazy SoCal.
"He carried Huntington Beach is his pocket wherever he went," remarked longtime friend and surf buddy Scott Waring. "When people thought of Huntington surfing, it was Rockin' Fig, Carl Hayward and Mike. He'll be greatly missed by many people."
There will be a memorial paddle out for Mike on the Southside of the Huntington Pier on June 11th at 11:30am during the HB Surf Series contest.
