View the Break Map for Martin's Beach
Heading south from Half Moon Bay, look for the Martin's Beach sign, turn right and you'll stumble on the northern California version of Orange County's Crystal Cove, a weird little enclave of mobile homes and beach shacks, overlooking an isolated beach. It costs $5 to drive down onto Martin's Beach, and sometimes that $5 will buy you some surf. There's a left-and-right reefbreak on the south end of the beach that gets fun in the summer and a decent little beginner's spot on the north end. Great place to bring the family.

Best Tide: incoming to medium Best Swell Direction: SW Best Size: small to well overhead Best Wind: E Perfect-O-Meter: 5 (1=Lake Erie; 10=Jeffreys Bay) Bottom: reef outside, sand inside Ability Level: The north end is a good beginner's spot. Bring Your: family Best Season: fall, spring, summer Access: cost ya $5, but there's always plenty of room Crowd Factor: minimal Local Vibe: possible Bicep Burn: 3. Minimal. (1=1ft Waikiki; 10=15ft Ocean Beach) Poo Patrol: 2. Doubtful. (1=clean; 10=turds in the lineup) Hazards: The people living down there may mistake you for a revenuer. Also, there are a lot of rocks and seals and deep-water troughs offshore, so you know there must be sharks. |
