The Surfrider Foundation Kauai chapter continues to offer a reward for information and the capture of the individual(s) responsible for the shooting deaths of two Hawaiian Monk Seals on different Kauai beaches this past spring. Both incidents are separate multiple felony crimes. These docile, endangered mammals are protected under the Endangered Species Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act and state wildlife laws, and there only 1,000 or so still alive in the wild. You can donate to the reward effort here: http://surfriderkauai.ning.com/

A dangerously broken and exposed channel marker along the Kaiser’s surf break in Honolulu was recently repaired. The jagged edged metal pole sat unrepaired for months, until a local paddle surfer accidently fell on it and was seriously injured. The marker’s owner, the Hilton Hawaiian Village hotel, was responsible for maintaining it and other markers and quickly had contractors repair it before the busy summer surf season started.

The month of June saw a tremendous run of high surf on the south shores of all Hawaiian Islands, with claims that they were some of the biggest swells ridden in the last decade. Though this may have been true for the spots that have a favorable swell window, some places may have been left out of the dance; Pakalas on Kauai, Banyans on the Big Island, Maalaea and Mala Wharf on Maui reported solid but very manageable surf heights. The over head to double overhead SSW angles certainly fit Ala Moana Bowls nicely as grinding big-bowl pits and boiling foam balls kept the boys happy for nearly three consecutive weeks.

The south swells seemed to bring out the old guard as well with the ageless Michael Ho and waterman Brock Little giving Ala Mo a real going over, Buttons Kaluhiokalani was seen on the news taking a young boy with terminal cancer out for a thrilling tandem surf session in town, and a stoked Hans Hedemann gushed about how the recent swells have created increased business for his surf school operation in Waikiki.

19 year old ironwoman Joy Magelssen took down top placings in the girls and pro-am longboard divisions, and grabbed a third in the girls shortboard division to dominate competition at the 2009 China Uemura Wahine Surfing Classic at Queens on 6/11. Magelssen bagged $1,250 for the pro-am win. The event enjoyed pumping 3’-5’ surf, stoked competitors, and the proceeds raised benefit the Sex Abuse Treatment Center of Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children. Mahalo to China and all the volunteers for their tremendous efforts!

“Fierce Heart”, a book by Stuart H. Coleman, attempts to give readers an intimate look at the famous Keaulana family of Makaha and daily life on Oahu’s beautiful Westside. Coleman also authored “Eddie Would Go” which earned favorable reviews worldwide. However, a controversy over the Fierce Heart’s portrayal of the family and community has heated up, and the Keaulana’s have filed a lawsuit to have the book removed from store shelves. The plaintiff’s attorney, John Carroll, claims that the book is full of gross inaccuracies and that the Keaulana’s attempts to have the contents edited for correction prior to its release, failed. The book was published and released by the St. Martin’s Press.

Speaking of the Garden Isle, county officers are growing increasingly concerned about the rapid retreat of the sand at Poipu Beach on Kauai’s south shore. Like Waikiki, Poipu’s ocean enclave is a major economic “amenity” with many well occupied resort hotels clustered around it, and there are a couple of excellent surf spots right out front. The sand loss has left the shoreline rocky and unwelcoming for tourists. Government and tourism authorities are publicly lobbying for a sand replenishment project, but nothing official has been decided or planned to address the situation at this point.
