Thanksgiving’s over. Hurricane season’s done. But the winter surfing holiday’s just begun. Keep your eyes on Surfline for coverage from the past week and forecasts for more systems to come. And if that’s not enough of a feast, dig into the Vans Triple Crown and our Hawaii coverage where CJ Hobgood, Sterling Spencer and Ben Bourgeois are already getting into the spirit by handing out turkeys in Honolulu. Hey, and while you’re at it, check the Local’s View on San Juan with captions by Carlos Cabrero, photos by Steve Fitzpatrick and a whole help of good surfing by Otto Flores, the Bursian brothers and more. Activists, clear your schedules: On Dec. 4, it’s Rincon Surfrider’s monthly meeting from 7:30 to 10pm at Balneario de Rincón. Then, on Dec. 6, be at Domes from 8am to 1pm for a beach clean-up. Congrats to Mauricio Diaz. The San Juan 12-year-old is the current NSSA Surfer of the Week after winning Open Boys and Menehune and taking second in Explorer Boys up in Florida a few weeks back. On Friday the 21st of November, the premiere of the film "Salva Tres Palmas" (Saving Tres Palmas) was shown to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the World Surfing Championship in Rincon. Surfrider organizers were hoping to get at least 200 persons, but over 300 showed up to celebrate the community's effort to save an Elkhorn coral reef Forest, threatened by trash and irresponsible construction. And don’t forget about Rincon’s ongoing community project, "Coral Reef Protection through Marine Debris Removal in Reserva Marina Tres Palmas." Aside from cleaning the beach, the reef and local quebradas will be cleaned as well. Different methods will be used including beach cleaning, landscaping, nearshore snorkeling and free-diving, and scuba diving from the boat. If you are interested in helping out in this community effort in any way please ”email Wess. It only takes a little asphalt to make water quality worse. And the PR Department of Transportation's proposed bicycle and pedestrian trail is actually a two lane paved road that will harm or destroy beaches, habitat, beach access and water quality and threatens endangered species including sea turtles and Elkhorn coral. Click here to send a letter urging Rincón's Mayor, the Governor of Puerto Rico, the PR Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration to redesign the path with community input. And volunteers are now testing local waters as part of the Blue Water Task Force — the Surfrider Foundation's water quality monitoring, education and advocacy program created to alert citizens and officials in their communities about water quality problems and to work toward solutions. Samples are collected every Tuesday and results are available on line. For more information, check the BWTF website. And to volunteer, please call 787.823.2784. The national election’s done, but another political fight is only beginning. With Congress lifting the ban on offshore drilling , now’s the time to contact your Senators and State Reps and tell them it’s time to explore for fresh energy solutions – not petroleum. And, finally, what’s the best part of a surf trip? That giant excess baggage fee the airlines pork you with on both sides, right? Wrong! Well, stop bitching and do something by signing this petition.
