What we've got here, baby, are two black sand beaches separate by a giant hunk of earth called Lion Rock. Spectacular is barely the word. It'll take your breath away the first time you rock up and stand there on the cliff looking down. Surf-wise, there's a good left at the south end, lefts and right-hand double ups off Lion Rock and peaks to the north.

Good, cheap food at the RSA (Returned Services Association) and the bowling club. Also, Blair's On The Beach.

Art galleries, tennis courts, galleries blah blah blah. Where are the wild clubs? Save it for Auckland. If you're dying for a hit of adrenaline dial up AWOL Adventures (phone:+64 9 834 0501 or 0800 462 965) and go canyoning or night canoeing.
