LOCAL NEWS:
Talk about entering a ‘period of heightened activity.’ Gustav weren’t even done workin’ the Gulf before Hanna reached hurricane status off the Bahamas, and both Ike and Josephine became earned names out in the Atlantic. With Gustav killing 77 in Haiti alone, this season could quickly grow even deadlier. Monitor every storm at National Hurricane Center and stay tuned to Jeff Masters blog for a thorough discussion.

Meanwhile, the storm over offshore drilling is getting nastier as current Florida legislation could set a precedent for all US coastal states. Read Surfline’s coverage then click here to speak your mind.

Back home, starting Sept. 3, Massachusetts Chapter General Meetings will be held on the first Wednesday of every month at the Wainwright Bank - Community Room, 250 Elm Street Somerville, MA, Davis Square. Meetings begin at 6:30 pm

And, once again, ESA NNE had to push last weekend’s comp to this coming weekend, so they are on call for Saturday, Sept. 6 in York, Maine. Monitor the site for status.

Surfrider Connecticut will meet Mon., Sept. 8 at 7pm at the City Hall in New Haven. They also plan on marking storm drains this month, date, time and location TBD, so stay tuned.

And Montanaro Gallery is pleased to present Surf Art Nouveau, featuring surfing-inspired works by over 25 leading visual artists. Join them for an Opening Reception on Sat., Sept.13, 7-10pm, at18 Franklin Street in Newport, Rhode Island. Participating artists in this largest and most diverse group show to date include Randy Noborikawa, John Severson, Tyler Warren, Lucas Lundgren, Ned Evans, Julie Goldstein, Adrian Massie, Elizabeth Montanaro, Wade Koniakowsky, Glenn Martin, Spencer Reynolds, Andrew Jacob, Bart Hopkins, Andrew Sloan, Ben Brough, Ty Williams, Michael Montanaro,Bonzi, Vincenzo Ganadu, Shannon Menzil, George Bates, Alexander Brown and more. The show will stay on through Oct. 5.

You can read the full Montanaro press release at NESurf.com, as well as get the scoop on the Sept. 20 Classic Longboard Contest set for Gooch’s Beach in Kennebunk. Hosted by Kennebunk Outdoors Surf & Skate in conjunction with Kennebunk Parks & Rec, all surfboards must be made prior to 1968 and reach 3 feet over the surfer’s head. Check in time is 7am on the beach with an anticipated 8AM start time. (Please pre-register at Kennebunk Outdoors Surf & Skate, 73 Route 1, Kennebunk. All proceeds will go to the Kennebunk Youth Wrestling Program.)

And, while you’re there, read all about the 2008 ESA Labor Day Surf Games, which went down this past weekend where the big winner was Narragansett’s Open and Boys champ Matt Nota. Other champs included: Cole Morehead (Menehunes); Alex Rastelli (Jr. Men and Junior Longboard); Jarrett Parker (Men); Ron Belanger (Senior Men); Peter Pan (Legends and Legends Longboard); Elizabeth Davis (Girls); Sarah Lim (Women and Women Longboard); Janice Causey (Senior Women and Senior Women Longboard); Andy Nota (Menehune Longboard); Jim Chabot (Masters Longboard): and Pat Redmond (Open Bodyboard). The next local New England event will be the 34th Annual Northeast Surfing Titles, to be held in Narragansett on October 18th.

Maine’s Grain surfboards still has a few spots available in their September and October classes. Fall is a great time to be in New England, with less crowds, better waves and more color in the leaves. Call 207-457-5313 for details on how you can learn to build your own board. And check Surfing Mag’s new Green issue for some Grain ISD action.

And finally, if you missed the tag-team of wettie company promo tours this August, you can still read the post-reports. Cory Lopez, Jesse Hines, Alek Parker and Nils Schweizer spent two weeks in the O’Neill RV on a quest up the Eastern Seaboard to bring O’Neill’s new film “The Life” to beach towns from Florida to Maine....
