The 2-day "Soul Stoke" annual event is back, to be held on Saturday, September 6th, and part of the overall end of summer festivities catering to the locals of the Jersey Shore at the Surf Club in Ortley Beach. Come out at 8am for the contest, a "Risky Bikini" show, BBQ, live music, raffles, and giveaways, and later that night, a huge Beer Pong Tournament (21 and older). 10 percent of proceeds will go to the Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation. More information: here. See you there.
Talk about entering a ‘period of heightened activity.’ Gustav weren’t even done workin’ the Gulf before Hanna reached hurricane status off the Bahamas, and both Ike and Josephine became earned names out in the Atlantic. With Gustav killing 77 in Haiti alone, this season could quickly grow even deadlier. Monitor every storm at National Hurricane Center and stay tuned to Jeff Masters blog for a thorough discussion.
Meanwhile, the storm over offshore drilling is getting nastier as current Florida legislation could set a precedent for all US coastal states. Read Surfline’s coverage then click here to speak your mind.
Back home, the big news is this week’s 2008 Unsound Pro set for Sept. 3-7 at Lincoln Blvd in Long Beach NY. Besides a men’s purse of $20,000, they are also planning to hold a Pro Junior, tow-at, longboard and women’s events. Click here for more.
And the Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation announced their 8th Annual “Surf For A Cause” surf and beach festival will be Sept. 6 in front of Lucy the Elephant in Margate, NJ. This family event includes a surf contest with a professional surfing division, a volleyball tournament, plus an after party at Maynard’s in Margate beginning at 6:30 p.m. with live music, food and drink specials for 21 years or older. Tax deductible $45 contest entry fee ($55 day of); tickets for the after party are $20.00 at the door. Click here for more.
On Sept. 7 Surfrider Central Long Island joins up with the American Littoral Society's International Coastal Clean Up to present The Pasta Jam. Beach clean up starts at 12:00pm at Cedar Beach, Babylon, where they’ll raffle off a surfboard for participants. Then at 1pm, it’s the party, with live music by the Sun Gets Down and free pasta (just bring some sauce to contribute). Surfrider CLI will also be having a paddle out for clean water on Sept. 11.
Meanwhile, the ESA CNJ plans to run Contest #8 in Harvey Cedars Sept. 6 or 7, while ESA SNJ will be at 7th Street in Ocean City, NJ for Open Shortboard and All Longboard Divisions. And the NSSA Northeast Conference is set to run another comp no Sept. 7 at States Ave. in Atlantic City. (No surf date of Sept. 14.)
Go to LocalSwell.com for news on this year’s Belmar Pro, set for September 11-14. Not only is there a $25,000 purse, but shapers Bob McTavish, Steve Walden and Greg Webber will be there, plus live music by Barry and the Penetrators, Scott Kirby, Predator Dub Assassins and Reform. And while you’re there, get the results from last week’s Grom Grudge Match 2008 where Balaram Stack defeated Rob Kelly in the Pro Junior while PJ Raia won the under 15 division. (And don’t forget: the 6th Annual Manasquan Longboard Classic is on for Sept. 14 at Inlet Beach.)
