Aloha, this is Kekoa with the report for Monday morning at 7:00 AM. 8-12 ft. - 3 ft. overhead to double overhead + and good conditions.
Northwest swell peaking this morning. Surf easily topping out in the overhead to double overhead range. Most spots are washing through so you have to pick and choose wisely. Light trades are blowing to provide nice ocean surface conditions for most of the day.
Partly sunny with scattered showers. Haze. Highs 77 to 84. Light winds becoming south around 10 mph in the late morning and afternoon. Chance of rain 50 percent. North Shore BOOMING this morning. Surf favoring more of a northerly angle this morning but there is some west in it as well. Waves easily in the overhead to double overhead range although the wave period is a bit inconsistent. Lots of spots are washing through but there are other well known breaks handling the energy. Buoy 1 is reading a macking 11ft @ 16 seconds...so look for this swell to hang steady all day today. Light trade winds are blowing and will provide nice side to offshore conditions for country shorelines today. Anything else on the horizon for northern shores? Check our extended forecast for all the details. TUESDAY: NNW swell fading through the day with surf in the head to overhead range. Select reefs still holding set waves pushing up to double overhead on occasion (especially in the morning). Good/clean conditions. Swell dropping further over Tuesday night. Wind: South winds clocking East through the day around 5-10kts.

A local North Shore surfer in his 20¹s was pulled from the water after nearly drowning at Gas Chambers, a powerful reef break between Pupukea and Rocky Point. It happened during the first sizeable swell of the season on 9/30. Between combo NNW and NE swells, the waves were crossed up and dumpy. He was said to have been in stable but critical condition at an area hospital. A very cool article in The Honolulu Advertiser helps us catch up on the life of the venerable Mark Cunningham. He waxes on his ongoing love affair with bodysurfing and the Banzai Pipeline. At age 53, Mark describes how he's surrounded by younger, faster, stronger riders, but is working hard on his fitness level and still showing the whippersnappers a thing or two in the water. Link: here. Surf shops specializing in Stand Up Paddle boards and accessories are popping up like weeds all over Oahu. Expect a record number of ³standers² to be invading North Shore lineups this season. Last year there were some heated confrontations and at least one reported punch up, and SUP¹s have seemingly allowed increasing numbers of surf novices access to already cramped wave zones. Eh, share waves and no drop in ah you guys!!! The first rounds of the 2008 Billabong Junior Pro In Memory of Ronnie Burns ran in slightly overhead, but bumpy surf at Sunset Beach on 10/1. Hawaii's top junior surfers competed for the top seven overall placings to qualify for the super competitive World Junior Pro to be held in Australia in January 2009. Speaking of Sunset Beach, the holding period for the annual Xcel Pro starts on October 26th, and the final rounds of the Junior Pro will finish up at the same time.
