Like most classics, no one was ever going to be able to keep Gnaraloo a secret. One hundred miles north of Carnarvon, the wave is a quarter-mile-long left-hander that features outrageously shallow step-filled barrels and endless rippable walls. And all before the watchful eye of hundreds of sharks.
You're a long way from medical help here, so pack well, surf sensibly, and keep your eyes on your buddies.

Despite the difficulty in getting here and the harshness of the camp, don't be surprised if you're surfing among a crowd of 50 or more.
5. Some Western Australian surfers spend every winter here and are, understandably, a little protective of the wave they adore and worship. Tread lightly. If you charge the sets, you'll get respect and quickly climb the hierarchical ladder; if not, wait at the back of the line.
8. Long wave, long paddle. (1=knee-high Waikiki; 10=triple-overhead Ocean Beach)
