LOCAL NEWS, PHOTOS AND VIDEO
LOCAL NEWS:
Bad news: Virginia still wants to drill offshore, potentially polluting the whole Mid-Atlantic and setting a nasty precedent for every coastal state to follow. Good news: you have another week to spout off since the MMS extended the public comment period to Jan. 13. Tell them ‘no way.’ Tell your Senators and State Reps it’s time to explore for fresh energy solutions – not petroleum. Tell your friends to do the same. Then go to Surf-First after your next session and tell them everything they need to know to help keep oil rigs off our coast -- and tar off our beaches -- forever.

Look for the competition to get slick starting next week when the O’Neill Sebastian Inlet Pro presented by Ron Jon, runs Jan. 12-18, gathering the world’s best surfers for the first WQS of the season. The Collegiate Surfing Association will also host its inaugural regional college surfing championships at the SI Pro on Sunday, Jan. 11.(Parties interested in becoming involved with the CSA or individual college surf teams can email the directors. )

As of Sunday, Travis Beckmann was the last East Coaster standing in the Billabong World Junior Championships. Make sure he stays there: give him an e-cheer at the Billabong Pro website.

Back in Florida, Suncoast Surfrider will hold a Surf Expo Launch Party on Jan. 10 at Mulligan’s on Blind Pass. Come out for free food, free keg, live music and surfboard raffle.

Speaking of Surf Expo, any Surfrider members looking to volunteer at the booth, Jan. 15-17, need to check the TC Chapter website for details. Remember: you must be a current member, 16 or over, and willing to work two hours. Only 50 slots available.

Now, back to the comps as ESA CFL holds contest #6 on Jan. 10-11 at Pelican Park in Satellite Beach. ESA Treasure Coast look to Jan. 11 at a location to be determined. And on Jan. 17, Palm Beach County ESA will throw down at an unnamed locale. (Meanwhile, the NSSA Southeast/North Conference will battle in Bethune Beach on Jan. 17-18.)

On Jan. 13, at 7pm, First Coast Surfrider will meet at Ocean Point resort Tiki Bar/Pool in Pompano Beach. The chapter also wants to thank everyone who came out this weekend for the year’s first beach clean-up: Scott McCaskill, Kristin Yoder, Jason Fuller, Katie Fuller, Phil Brown, Kim Brown, Mark Collins, Paul Hayden, Ad Cronin, Donald Stew, Donny Barley, and? Danny Barley. Nice work, y’all.

And Jan. 15, PBC Surfrider is looking to meet somewhere in North County; stay tuned to the site for deets.

So the New Year’s been slow surf-wise for the East Coast. Relive the best vid clips of 2008 -- including Cory Lopez reeling from Africa to Hatteras -- then enjoy the Outer Banks best 2008 memories, with this spot-check starring Jesse Hines and Noah Snyder – and the Gulf Coast’s own Sterling Spencer. Or just watch Peter Mendia get sick in South Florida.

If all else fails, you can count on Fuel TV to keep you stoked, starting Monday, Jan. 12, with coverage of CJ’s victory and Slater’s ninth title win at the Billabong Pro Mundaka. Then, on Jan. 15, join Shayne and Shannon McIntyre as they explore Nicaragua and visit the friendly humanitarian crew of East Coast ex-pats.

And, finally, what’s the best part of a surf trip? That giant excess baggage fee the airlines pork you with on both sides, right? Wrong! Well, stop bitching and do something by signing this petition.
