LOCAL NEWS:
It’s on. Just two weeks after 2007 ASP season ended, 2008 begins, this time at Sebastian Inlet where the O’Neill SI Pro will make history by being the first five-star event on the Atlantic Seaboard. Already one of the tougher events thanks to Surf Expo and a stocked Florida field like the Hobgoods and Lopezes, the bigger rating will draw even more WQS warriors battling for their first keeper score. It all starts Jan. 4. Watch it live here. And for more info, click here.

Hey, it’s not even New Years yet and we already miss Christmas – at least we miss the waves. Relive the holiday magic through Surfline’s coverage by clicking here.

Surfrider Laptop Stolen Saturday: $500 RewardA
On Saturday night between 7 and 11pm, perpetrators entered a private home on Calle Surf and made off with the Surfrider laptop. The circumstances of the robbery are suspicious as no other valuables, including a purse and wallet that were near the machine, were taken. A $500 reward is being offered for any information that leads to the recovery of the machine or the arrest of the culprits. Call 787.431.0412 with information.

Join the fight next Thursday night when Surfrider’s Rincon Chapter meets on Jan. 3 at the Centro de Envejecientes de Rincón (Geriatric Center), across from the State Police Station and Municipal Assembly. Meetings start at 7:30 pm.

Volunteers are now testing local waters as part of the Blue Water Task Force — the Surfrider Foundation's water quality monitoring, education and advocacy program created to alert citizens and officials in their communities about water quality problems and to work toward solutions. Samples are collected every Tuesday and results are available on line. For more information, check the BWTF website. And to volunteer, please call 787.823.2784.

It only takes a little asphalt to make water quality worse. And the PR Department of Transportation's proposed bicycle and pedestrian trail is actually a two lane paved road that will harm or destroy beaches, habitat, beach access and water quality and threatens endangered species including sea turtles and Elkhorn coral. Click here to send a letter urging Rincón's Mayor, the Governor of Puerto Rico, the PR Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration to redesign the path with community input so it makes sense for Rincón and protect.
